Could A Beagle Be The Perfect Companion For You?

The Beagle disposition is one that never fails to enchant, with its upbeat demeanour and wagging tail. These magnificent, well-built scent hounds were trained to hunt in packs and are intimately linked with fox hunting.

So, will the Beagle be your ideal companion? Continue reading to find out!

A Beagle's Temperament

It's no surprise that the Beagle has long been a family favourite. It's friendly, lively, and compact. These high-energy hounds require lots of daily activity, but once suitably spent, they're content to be at home with their owners.

They are excellent children's companions and get along well with cats and other dogs. As with any breed, appropriate socialization of your Beagle should begin at an early age so they can learn to play gently and not get too aggressive.

Beagles are intelligent, inquisitive dogs, but don't expect them to heed your every order right away - they'd rather follow their nose and explore. It is feasible to teach a Beagle, but it will take a lot of patience and continuous positive reinforcement training sessions. Make absolutely sure you have enough goodies on hand, and you'll be all set.

Is It Easy To Train A Beagle?

Since Beagles are sociable and inquisitive pups, early socialization and puppy courses are an excellent way to begin their canine education. It is feasible to teach a Beagle, but it will take a lot of patience and continuous positive reinforcement training sessions. As they're driven by treats, making sure you have plenty of goodies on hand can help you teach your Beagle great puppy manners.

They do not respond well to extremely strong reinforcement, so praising their positive actions while attempting to overlook the negative will result in a well-behaved dog.

Exercise Guidelines For Your Beagle

A decent rule of thumb for Beagle pups is to walk them for 5 minutes every month, up to twice a day. Each day, an adult Beagle needs 60 to 90 minutes of exercise. Senior Beagles require 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day, divided over two or more sessions.

A Beagle's Grooming Requirements

The Beagle's short, weather-resistant coat is easy to care for. Brushing your Beagle twice or thrice a week may help reduce the accumulation of dead hair in your home and stimulate the growth of new, healthy hair.

Baths are seldom necessary for Beagles, but frequent grooming allows you to examine areas like coat sheen (dull coat might indicate a lack of nutrients in their diet), nail length, and ear and dental health.

If your dog's nails don't wear down naturally, trim them once or twice a month to avoid unpleasant rips and other issues. In general - if you hear them clicking on the floor, they are due for a trim. As dog toenails include blood vessels, cutting them too short might result in bleeding, and your dog may refuse to comply the next time the nail clippers are being pulled out. So, if you're not used to cutting dog nails, get advice from a doctor or visit a professional groomer.

Since Beagles have drop-eared ears, you should inspect them at least every two weeks for symptoms of infection or waxy accumulation. Examine them as well if you observe your Beagle shaking their head or scratching at their ears. Never let water or oils go into their ears.

Brush your Beagle's teeth at least twice a week to eliminate tartar and the germs that live inside them. Brushing twice a day is even preferable if you want to avoid gum disease and foul breath.

A Beagle's Size

Beagles may be divided into two kinds. The smaller variant is 33 centimetres or shorter and weighs less than 9 kilograms, while the bigger ones range from 33 to 38 centimetres and weigh between 9 and 13 kilograms.

The Average Life Span Of A Beagle

A Beagle has an anticipated life expectancy of 10 to 15 years if properly cared for, which means they can be long-term pals and companions, growing with your family!
