All About Shih-Poos

Shih-Poo is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle (most often the Miniature Poodle). The hybrid is normally small, weighing between 5 and 9 kilograms, and is obedient to their humans. The Shih-Poo is sweet and affectionate, and while they will try to please their parents, they are normally reserved around strangers. This cross can get along well with children and other dogs, and since they are bright, the Shih-Poo is easy to train.

Shih-Poo’s Appearance

The Shih-Poo's coat can differ depending on the traits inherited; it may be curly, short or long (or somewhere in between), and silky. They can be in coat colours of grey, brown, black and white. The Shih-Poo's amber eyes are normally round and sparkle with a mischievous gleam, and since they are a very adorable mix of their kin, they will appear to be a huggable teddy bear.

Shih-Poo’s Maintenance

Shih-Poos tend to have wavy or curly hair that needs to be brushed regularly. Many find that going to a licensed groomer three to four times a year for a trim helps to keep their dog's hair in good condition. Fortunately, the breed does not shed excessively. Since the Shih-Poo might have tearing issues, it is critical to check and clean their eyes as and when necessary. Their ears should be washed and examined, weekly. Your Shih-Poo's teeth should be brushed several times a week, and his nails should be trimmed as required, as with all dogs.

Shih-Poo’s Temperament

The Shih-Poo will inherit the characteristics of their parent breeds, the lovable Shih Tzu and the astute Poodle. The Shih-Poo, who is quiet and willing to please, would be obedient to his humans while remaining wary of outsiders. The Shih-Poo is typically intelligent, playful, and affectionate, and they enjoy spending time with their family members, be it on their laps or joining them on adventures. The Shih-Poo can be very energetic and will love playing with toys such as stuffed animals and balls. This crossbreed would get along well with children and other pets.

Shih-Poo’s Activity Requirements

It will differ depending on the dog and the characteristics inherited by their parents. A modest amount of exercise is needed for the Shih-Poo's physical and mental wellbeing. A dog of this size and temperament can benefit from daily short to medium-length stroll. The Shih-Poo will love both obedience and agility exercises, which will keep them busy while still encouraging them to use their sharp mind.
