What You've Got To Know About The Cavapoo

The Cavapoo is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle. With the cute face of a Cavalier and often the hypoallergenic hair of a Poodle, the Cavapoo will make an amazing member of any family.

This pooch is the literal embodiment of a big dog's disposition in a small dog's body. They are an excellent member for a family looking for a puppy to cuddle on the sofa or accompany them on early morning jogs.

So, what exactly is a Cavapoo?

Originally, they were bred to be hypoallergenic, low-energy companion dogs. Their cute look and gentle disposition quickly made them a favourite choice for all dog lovers. Their loyal and social temperament makes them an excellent family or therapy dog, particularly for people who suffer from allergies. Since this dog is a crossbreed, there is no set breed standard, although most Cavapoos follow the same standard guidelines.

Their mission is straightforward: to become your next best friend and cuddle buddy.

Life Span: 12 to 15 years

Size: 22 - 35 cm

How does a Cavapoo look like?

Their friendly and welcoming smile is set on a round face with wide almond-shaped eyes and long floppy ears. It's also likely that they'll have a flat muzzle. Given their small size, this breed isn’t petite; rather, they have a strong, robust build, which adds to their suitability as a companion for children.

Since they are a mixed breed, the typical appearance of a Cavapoo can vary. They can take on the appearance of a Cavalier or a Poodle. This can also have an effect on their coat. Hence, some Cavalier Poodles do shed.

How does a Cavapoo coat look like?

When you mix a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle, you get a dog with a short, fluffy coat that can be curly or wavy. Cavapoos do not shed because of their Poodle-like coat; instead, their fur grows (which means they do need regular haircuts). Their coat is usually kept reasonably short, but this choice is ultimately determined by their owner. The most popular haircut will ultimately be the Teddy Bear Cut.

What are the personality and temperament of a Cavapoo?

As for any mixed breed, it is impossible to predict which characteristics a Cavapoo would inherit from their Cavalier and Poodle parents. Regardless of what breeders say, it is difficult to predict the disposition of a Cavapoo puppy. It won't become apparent until later in life.

Affectionate

Cavapoos are usually affectionate and caring dogs who will relish the opportunity to be in your company. They easily form bonds with their pet parents' family members and enjoy becoming a part of a family unit.

Active

If you've decided that a Cavapoo is the perfect family pet for you, you can expect to live an active lifestyle. These dogs would need to exercise on a daily basis to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

The amount of energy your Cavapoo has will be determined by whether they inherited the active genes of their Poodle parent or the Cavalier parent's much more laid-back attitude towards life.

Family pets

Cavapoos thrive in a family setting. They enjoy spending time with other family members. So, when you get home, you can trust your Cavapoo to welcome you with boundless excitement.

Smart

Poodles are thought to be highly intelligent dogs. A Cavapoo has a high chance of being intellectual. Though their IQ may not be as high as that of their Poodle parent, Cavapoos are typically quick to train and willing to learn.

Social

Cavapoos are social dogs that get along well with other dogs and people. A Cavapoo can often be seen socializing with other dogs at the dog park.

How much exercise does a Cavapoo require?

Despite the fact that one of their parents is a working dog, the Cavapoo does not require a lot of exercises. This pooch is always content with brief bursts of playtime accompanied by a moment of relaxation.

This breed only needs two to three brief walks (15-minutes) a day. This would exhaust them well for the next walk or playtime. Since the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a sporting dog, the Poodle mix is likely to be as well. Off-leash walking is also not recommended for this breed. Hiking is an experience that will be beneficial to your Cavapoo.

Not only can your dog be introduced to fresh scents and sights, but he or she will be able to spend quality time with their favourite humans.

Total Daily Activity: 30 - 45 minutes.

How to groom a Cavapoo?

While Cavapoos are a low-maintenance breed, they still need weekly brushing to keep their coat clean. Any Cavapoos with longer coats will need more brushing, but a monthly clip or trim will keep their coat looking fine.
