5 Natural Foods To Boost Your Dog's Health

The key to a long and healthy life begins with nutrition. Always.

We love whole, natural, fresh and healthful foods, and we cannot emphasize more on how nourishing they are for our dogs.

There are some wonderful natural foods that can provide supplementary benefits to your dogs' health without breaking the bank or requiring that you import anything overseas. The following are five of our favourites.

SPINACH

Steamed spinach offers plenty of iron and vitamin K, which will help the health of your dog's bones and heart. Spinach is also a great cancer-preventing vegetable, making it a great add-in to your dog's regular mealtime dog food.

BONE BROTH

Bone broth is a long forgotten superfood that's inexpensive, nutrient packed and is incredibly simple to add to your dog's diet. Not only does bone broth contain amazing amounts of glucosamine, it's also packed with high levels of collagen and gelatin making it an ideal whole food supplement for joint health. Bone broth is also ideal for sick dogs and senior dogs, as it is extremely easy to digest and is soothing for their guts.

HONEY

Pollen allergy? Too common. Pollen allergies are caused by your dog's body trying to protect itself from a harmful substance. Just like with humans, your dog's immune system detects a foreign substance, which in this case is pollen.

The solution? Fight poison with poison. Honey can potentially assist in the relief and prevention of seasonal allergies. It does this by providing small doses of pollen and essentially building up a tolerance so that when pollen enters your dog via the nose or skin the body is protected from an overactive immune response that may trigger an allergy. In order for this to work, the honey must contain the same strains of pollen that are in the air, so it must be local, organic and raw.

EGGS

Eggs are a near-perfect food for dogs owing to the fact that they contain all ten of the essential minerals dogs require and a host of other nutrients, including vitamins A, D3, E, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, K, iodine, choline, calcium, biotin, potassium, sulphur, folic acid, phosphorus, iron, selenium and zinc.

BLUEBERRIES

Traditionally we think of dogs as carnivores. While dogs definitely should eat a prey-based diet (at least 80% animal protein), they do have the digestive capabilities to tolerate some plant matter and obtain nutrients from it. Blueberries are the most species-appropriate and antioxidant-rich choice for your pup so do feed them some for a nutrient boost.
